Carl E. Loerzel, Jr. spent thirty years with the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Communications, located in Syracuse, NY retiring in September 2019. He started his career as a Public Safety Dispatcher in 1989 with the Onondaga County Sheriff’s Office and transferred over to the Department of Emergency Communications in 1992 after police, fire and EMS consolidated into one PSAP. He served as a communication training officer, working through the ranks holding both Supervisor of Dispatch Operations and Public Safety Shift Supervisor ranks. He oversaw the technical service unit from 2006 – 2010 overseeing several projects including a major computer aided dispatch software change. In 2010 he was promoted to Deputy Commissioner of Operations where he oversaw the operations of the 911 center along with the training and technical services unit. He is a member of APCO and NENA and has been an Emergency Number Professional. He has an associate in science degree from SUNY Empire College concentration in Fire Protection. In January 2020 he started working part time for Syracuse University Department of Public Safety as an Emergency Communications Center Infrastructure Project Manager and a Public Safety Dispatcher 1. He has over 43 years as a volunteer firefighter where he currently serves as the Safety Officer/Assistant Chief. He is also a United States Navy veteran.
