Dr. Michael Bourke is a clinical and forensic psychologist in private practice in Northern Virginia. From 2008 to 2021 he served as the Chief Psychologist for the United States Marshals Service, where he created and then headed the USMS Behavioral Analysis Unit (BAU). Prior to joining the USMS he worked for the federal prison system, where he provided psychotherapeutic treatment, conducted risk assessments and other forensic evaluations, and administered polygraph examinations to unearth risk-relevant behavior.
For the past 15 years Dr. Bourke has assisted with the development of psychological resilience/safeguarding programs for NGOs and government agencies (e.g., INTERPOL, the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, FBI, numerous child advocacy centers) as well as large technology companies. Since 2020 had has provided training and consultation on wellness and resiliency to investigators, analysts, and prosecutors of war crimes throughout the world, and he has assisted with the design and implementation of a comprehensive wellness program for a large organization involved with investigating crimes against humanity. He has a particular passion for helping public safety personnel identify and manage primary and secondary traumatic stress, and he recently co-edited and published a book on the subject: First Responder Mental Health: A Clinician’s Guide. He is currently an adjunct faculty member at The George Washington University.
Dr. Bourke is an active researcher in the area of wellness and psychological safeguarding, and he was the lead researcher on the most comprehensive study ever conducted on first responder wellness. He is proud to be a board member of the Foundation for First Responder Wellness and Resiliency, which is located in Northern Viriniga. He and his work have been profiled in the Monitor of the American Psychological Association, The Washington Post, The New York Times, and several textbooks in forensic psychology.
